Need for Emergency Radiology training for Residents
We all know there are times particularly in academic
hospitals when resident on duty is alone in the department and is required to make critical decisions
including when to call the senior or not. He is scared what if he misses a
critical finding. This opens up a need for course or dedicated programme in
residency on handling emergencies so that they can be well prepared for this. There is a need to cover common pitfalls and must not miss areas such as cervical spine fractures. Even more important is for residents to learn when to ask their seniors and know their limitations.

Old time professors always taught that first thing in Medicine is to learn "When to call for help"
simple thumb rule in Radiology according to me is
When you have not arrived at a diagnosis justifying the patients problem , ONLY two possibilities exist
1. you have missed it
2. it is not there and and What to do now including next Radiology test/ repeat what has been done (when?)
Always let the senior take the call , very often he does not know either
but he knows the "Tricks of the Trade" if not Trade
