Radiomics

Due to advances in the acquisition and analysis of medical imaging, it is currently possible to quantify the tumor phenotype.  The emerging field of Radiomics works by converting medical images into minable data by extracting a large number of quantitative imaging features.

  1. The first step is acquisition of high quality standardized imaging. The macroscopic tumor is defined on these images, either with an automated segmentation method or alternatively by an experienced radiologist or radiation oncologist.
  2. Next, a large number of quantitative features is extracted from the previously defined tumor region. These features describe, amongst others, tumor image intensity, texture and shape and size of the tumor.
  3. The final step is analysis of the acquired imaging features.
