Need to bring Research back into focus in Indian Medical Schools
According to journal Current Medicine Research and Practice, 162 medical colleges registered under the Medical Council of India (MCI) and 170 under the National Board of Examination (NBE) have not contributed at all towards research in medical science. A total of 332 medical colleges in India have not published any research papers during 2005-14, a journal has revealed. The authors of the paper called for a ‘drastic overhaul” of medical education in the country. Their research showed that medical education had become a business.
Reasons for this could be many, there are no incentives for the medical schools and graduates for pursuing research. Another could be extreme workload at many institutions. And thirdly, it could be possible that our education system never really bothered about value of research. if we have to progress as a force in healthcare we have to promote genuine research and develop frugal, India centric technology & pharmacology updates.
Our medical schools and education system needs to look at promoting research culture. Research is the key to decide the future stake holders in world of medicine and India needs to soon learn to take the front seat in this side as well.
