Periventricular leukomalacia: MRI
6 year child shows T2/FLAIR white matter hyperintensity in the bilateral periventricular white matter along with paucity of white matter and ventricular contour abnormality-suggesting periventricular leukomalacia.
Periventricular leukomalacia results from hypoxic-ischemic
injury to watershed zones of arterial supply in the periventricular
white matter of the immature brain. These watershed zones are most prominent in the posterior periventricular
white matter at the trigone of the lateral ventricles and
in white matter adjacent to the foramina of Monro.
